Man, I HATE the final score of the Cotton Bowl. I hate it for our team. The Mizzou Tigers were most certainly the better team today. That Temple kid put on a rushing clinic today.
The idiot announcer in the booth with Pat Summerall made a couple of valid points — one of which is that the last time the Arkansas Razorbacks took the field, they knocked off the number one team in college football, the LSU Tigers.
What today’s TV coverage DIDN’T point out is that since that emotional victory, our team lost its coach, lost most of its staff to Ole Miss, got most of the staff BACK for bowl preps, DMac won the Doak Walker award, and came up short in the Heisman chase (take a deep breath here), ALMOST had a coach hired, then the deal came undone, and FINALLY did get a coach, who flew into town for a late, late news conference.
Sort of a fitting final chapter in a two-season melodrama off the field.
And I couldn’t be prouder of the players who stuck it out. I’ve said time and again that our student athletes showed more poise and maturity — on a consistent basis — than have the fans, the coaches, the university administration and even the players’ parents and the coaches’ friends.
I thought Reggie Herring was gonna cry in his post game interview. He said, “I’m sorry.” And he promised Razorback fans a better day.
Yep, I very much want to see us shake the bowl jinx. I want Arkansas to compete for national championships. More than that, I want the sideshow sagas to end (and I think, perhaps, they have), and I hope we’ll continue to recruit — and play — quality young men who played their hearts out today.
More than anything, though, I hope we never, ever, EVER wear all red uniforms EVER again!
Tracy,
At least we had the benefit of having a daughter who just graduated from Mizzou a couple of weeks ago. J-School, no less. And, she’s gainfully employed (producing noons for KTHV). So, I had some bit of excitement in seeing Mizzou do so well. Still, it would have been nice if the Hawgs had shown up to play!!
Hey, Doug —
Mizzou DOES turn out some darned good journalists, eh? I have lotsa friends who came from that program. Indeed, it is difficult to begrudge the Tigers’ success. The team seems to be a great bunch of kids.
Sheesh, your kids aren’t old enough to be college grads. I remember when they were little!
I’m sure your daughter will have a stellar career — not so much because of her education, but because being a good story-teller is in her DNA.
Hey, T: One of the annouincers during the OSU-Indiana game last night mentioned the “Oklahoma State Sooners.” He never corrected it. Made me want to hurl! He should be sued for slander.
You have GOT to be KIDDING!
I can’t prove it, but it’s an inflammatory statement that’s fun to say — Fox seems to have hired some punk kids who look good in front of a camera but know absolutely NOTHING about the sport they’re covering.
Look at the anchor team Fox-owned SPEED TV put together for that Sunday night racing recap show. Dumb as rocks, but learning. No experience covering racing.
And who was the kid sitting next to Tarkington and Johnson last night at the Sugar Bowl? He held his own, but looked like something stupid was gonna come out of his mouth any second.
I have absolutely NO problem with having good looking folks in front of cameras — I’d like to think I wasn’t too shabby in my day. But fergoodness sakes, please let em know the difference between Oklahoma State and OU, if they’re gonna be involved in college sports.
Guess I’m a mad lookin fer a place to happen this morning… 😉
